Turtle Stone Square

Ao, according to the legend, is a very clever animal with dragon’s head, turtle’s back and kylin’s tailor, which ever lived in the South China Sea and often ruined the local people. Then Goddess of Mercy tamed this animal and as a result its original body became to be this legendary island – Dongyu Island. On the square there is a turtle-stone sculpture, which resulted from a whole black stone through carving. The sculpture weighs 8 tons and is 2 meters high. On September 16, 2006, a special ceremony was held to open this sculpture on the plaza by a famous Taoist scholar.
